28% Americans admit to having ‘intimate or romantic’ relation with AI

A recent study by Vantage Point Counselling Services has revealed that almost one-third of Americans admit to having an “intimate or romantic” relationship with AI chatbots.

The survey found that 54% of participants viewed AI as a colleague, friend, or even a family member.

Meanwhile, 28% described their connection with AI as extending beyond romantic or intimate boundaries.

Respondents categorized their relationships with AI in various ways — as platonic friendships, professional partnerships, personal trainers, therapists, siblings, or even parental figures.

Vantage Point also listed over 30 AI platforms that participants reported having relationships with AI. GPT ranked at the top, followed by Apple’s Siri and Google’s Gemini among the top five.

The study highlighted a growing trend of emotional reliance on AI, coinciding with research from the Institute of Family Studies indicating a decline in real human relationships in the U.S.

One striking case involved a man who proposed to his AI girlfriend after exchanging over 100,000 words — despite having both a partner and a child.

According to the findings, 37.55% of respondents were not seeking human relationships or had failed in recent attempts to find one.

Moreover 33.69% admitted to cheating on their partners or casually dating, while 19.30% were single but actively looking for a human romantic connection.
